Big Lines in Japan for Nintendo's New DSi Handheld

Matt Peckham

A built-in camera, an audio makeover, and around 300 people in a busy Tokyo shopping district queued to buy one, Nintendo's new DSi has something for everyone.

Including Nintendo, who probably have another hit on their hands, going off an AFP report that the first shipments sold out before lunchtime in Tokyo's electronics district. Which makes a lot of sense, when you think about it.

Japan has slightly more than one-third the population of the US but nearly as large a DS install base. Almost one-fifth of the entire Japanese population own a DS (compared to just one-tenth in the US). What else are you going to do over lunch?

While you're waiting for the DSi to launch in the US, probably sometime next spring, check out the specs, or have a read through Yuriko Nagano's hands-on with one during the Tokyo Game Show last month.
