Report: Ziff Davis to Shutter PC Magazine Print Edition to Focus Online

Tom Spring, PC World

Publishing continues to evolve in the Internet age: Ziff Davis will stop publication of the print edition of PC Magazine in an effort to focus online, according to a report by PaidContent.org which interviewed Jason Young, the CEO of Ziff Davis. The last print edition of PC Magazine will be dated Jan. 2009, according to the report.

Young told PaidContent.org reporter Rafat Ali that Ziff Davis will now focus its attention on its PCMag Digital Network which include sites such as PCmag.com, ExtremeTech, Appscout, and more. The move would end 28 years of PC Magazine print publications, which began in 1982.

Ziff Davis has not yet confirmed or issued an official statement regarding the status of PC Magazine's print publication.

Ziff Davis has struggled financially over the years and has recently exited from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. PC Magazine has seen its print base of readers dwindle over the years as advertisers and readers have migrated to the Internet.

PC Magazine has been an archcompetitor to PC World magazine for decades. The roots of both publications are intertwined, as PC World's former editorial director Kevin McKean outlined in a 2003 column, The First 20 Years of PC World.

I wish the best of luck to Ziff Davis and look forward to healthy competition to continue online.
