Wolfram Research has introduced Mathematica 7, a new version of its computational software for Mac OS X and other platforms.

Mathematica is used throughout science, engineering and technical computing. It incorporates libraries of elemental and special math functions, 2D and 3D data visualization tools, solvers, statistics libraries, import and export filters and more.

Wolfram counts over 500 new functions in Mathematica 7. Key improvements include image processing, parallel High Performance Computing (HPC) support, on-demand curated data and other major functions.

Mathematica 7 adds a variety of computable data sources, including the complete human genome, weather, astronomical, GIS and geodesy data. New string alignment functionality improves Mathematica's ability to find, analyze and visual gene sequences, for example, and Mathematica 7 now includes real-time and historical weather data from 16,000 weather stations.

Other new features include charting and information visualization; vector field visualization; spline support including NURBS; improved Boolean computation; statistical model analysis; discrete calculus, sequence recognition and transcendental notes.
