If youre worried that your Dell notebook may be the victim of a flawed memory card, you can now find out for sure. The memory flaw, found only in certain models purchased last year, can cause system hang-ups and may corrupt or destroy files when the notebook is in the sleep mode.

On Thursday, Dell announced that it has developed an application that can test notebooks for the affected memory. The Memory Test Utility can be downloaded from Dell's customer support Web site (see link at right), according to the company.

Dell will deliver new memory modules to affected users.

The Dell notebooks affected include the Latitude CPiA, CPiR, CPt, CPx, and CS models, as well as the Inspiron 3500, 3700, 7000, and 7500 models. These models may have flawed memory cards of the RAM type that can cause data to be corrupted or lost and the computer to crash.

Dell also disclosed the number of possibly flawed notebooks shipped between February and November 1999.

"Today, we know that there are no more than 400,000 units that may have the potential for the problem," said Rob Crawley, a spokesperson at Dell's headquarters in Round Rock, Texas.
