LG Electronics is showing off a 15-inch OLED (organic light emitting diode) display at the International Consumer Electronics Show that's just 0.85 millimeters thick, less than half the thickness of a similar display it expects to market in the second half of this year.

The company's 2.5-mm-thick, 15-inch OLED display will be available in the second half of this year, according to Young Su Kim, an engineer at LG Electronics USA.

The 2.5-mm-thick OLED screens were on display at LG's booth at CES alongside the 0.85-mm screens.

Kim said OLED technology offers more vibrant colors on display screens at lower power consumption compared to mainstream LCD displays. The displays are so much thinner than LCDs because they do not require a backlight. Organic material in OLEDs emits its own light.

Earlier this week, LG Display announced a 15-inch OLED screen just 1.4-mm thick, the screen that will go into the OLED display LG Electronics plans to market later this year.
