Here's how to ready your PC for digital video editing, including IEEE 1394 installation.

Perform a full backup of your PC.
Scan and optimize your hard drives. Open My Computer, right-click the drive icon, select Properties, click the Tools tab, and click Check Now. When that's done, click Defragment Now. Repeat both steps for all hard drives in your PC.
Make sure your PC doesn't have any hardware conflicts. Select Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click the System icon. Select the Device Manager tab. If you see any exclamation marks, highlight each entry one by one, select Properties, and follow the directions to resolve the conflict.
