The Webby Nominees, Please

From arts to weird, leading Web sites vie for recognition from the International Academy for Digital Arts and Sciences.

While the Internet may not inspire fan frenzy on a Hollywood level, it does have its own version of the Academy Awards: the Webbys.

The International Academy for Digital Arts and Sciences has announced the nominees for the fourth annual Webby Awards. Selected from the Internet's 800 million or so Web sites are five nominees in each of 27 categories, including activism, arts, commerce, film, music, and even "weird."

This year's Oscars of the Internet will be Webcast live from San Francisco on May 11. And even dot-com stardom requires celebrity judges. This year, David Bowie, Patrick Stewart, Matt Groening, and Laurie Anderson lead the list of Academy judges picking winners from sites covering everything from commerce to little-known home pages.

This year's competitors are more diverse, thanks to the first-ever call for entries, according to Tiffany Schlain, founder and director of the Webby Awards. Thousands of submissions came from more than 27 countries.

Following is a list of the 2000 Webby Award nominees by category:
