DisplayPort Dual Link DVI Adapter Only for Apple Display

With the introduction of new MacBooks and MacBook Pros last fall, Apple implemented an emerging display standard: Mini DisplayPort, which replaced Digital Visual Interface (DVI). Users with existing 30-inch screens were directed to buy an Apple-offered Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI Adapter to connect it. Now they're being told that it's only compatible with Apple's 30-inch Cinema HD Display; users of other manufacturers' 30-inch displays appear to be out of luck.

The Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter is a US$99 peripheral that connects the Mini DisplayPort found on new MacBooks, MacBook Pros and the MacBook Air with Apple's 30-inch Cinema Display HD. At least that's how it's described now, according to the online Apple Store:

"The Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter lets you connect the 30-inch Apple Cinema Display HD to a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air with a Mini DisplayPort."

But originally, the description of device didn't restrict its use to the Cinema Display HD. It appears that the description switch was made following customer complaints, when MacBook users with Samsung and Dell 30-inch displays indicated that their displays were not working.

In some cases, the monitor won't work at all with the display connected. In other cases, the screen shows artifacts that produce an unreadable image.

Some users on Apple's discussion forums also indicate that they're having problems with Apple's 30-inch Cinema Display HD as well, however, suggesting that Apple support has more work to be done.

When contacted for comment, an Apple spokesperson reiterated the text of the Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI Adapter's description on the Apple store, but offered no further clarification.
