Axis Terra MX10

It's inexpensive, but don't expect this slow Axis system to beat speed limits.

WHAT'S HOT: For $929, the Terra MX10 won't burn a deep hole in your pocket. The PC ships with a detailed system manual, which offers helpful troubleshooting and upgrading information, as well as thorough documentation for system components. The midsize tower's fairly neat interior offers substantial room for expansion: four open slots (three PCI and one ISA) and four open bays (three internal and one external); however, access to the internal bays is somewhat impeded by the CPU. The 17-inch Axis 700EX monitor produced deep, rich colors and crisp text, with only slight blurring at its maximum resolution of 1280 by 1024.

WHAT'S NOT: Based on an AMD K6-2-550 CPU, this system earned only a 124 on our PC WorldBench 2000 tests--the lowest of any Windows NT system we've tested, including a Celeron-500 with only 64MB of RAM. To get inside the case, you must remove four screws that are easily lost, and once the case is off, it took some jiggling to replace.

WHAT ELSE: The Terra ships with a generic, too-flexible keyboard, and though it includes a detachable wrist rest, it took too much pressure to get the keys to register. Rear ports are well labeled to ease setup.

BEST USE: For those with cost constraints and no prejudice against yesterday's slower processors, this Terra would make an adequate stand-alone NT system.
