ViewSonic FuHzion VX2265wm

If you're seeking a 3D thrill, then you might want to check out the ViewSonic FuHzion VX2265wm, a 22-inch display that can render 3D images. But if you're looking for a widescreen display without bells and whistles, that 3D capability may not be worth the premium $350 price tag--especially since you have to spend extra for the 3D glasses.

To view 3D images on the VX2265wm, you must use nVidia's GeForce 3D vision glasses, which can be purchased separately in a kit that costs $200. And your PC must have the guts to make it work, too: You need to use an nVidia GeForce 8 card or later. The monitor is one of the first available with a 120Hz refresh rate, a standard on most HDTVs. That high refresh rate is ideal for reducing blur and producing accurate 3D images.

Our tests didn't examine the VX2265wm's 3D capability, but they did bear out ViewSonic's claim of picture clarity--we saw bright colors and sharp text. We also saw minimal blurring in our motion tests, so this display definitely would be a good choice for action flicks and gaming.

The VX2265wm has a pleasant design, with a glossy piano-black finish, and it can tilt and swivel quite easily, though it does not pivot. It includes one DVI connection, but lacks VGA and HDMI ports. It also has built-in speakers that produce reasonable volume; a dedicated gamer, however, will probably want to invest in an external set.

Unlike most other displays, this ViewSonic monitor offers few screen adjustments, limiting you to brightness and volume controls. If you wish to make any other alterations to the screen, you'll have to use controls through your graphics card.

Given its lack of controls and limited connectivity options--and the high price tag for its 3D abilities--the VX2265wm is certainly a niche display. The monitor's 3D capability makes it a good choice for gamers that are looking for an extra buzz when playing the latest shoot-em-up. But if you're looking for a monitor on which to simply get work done, you might want to look elsewhere.
