April 15 is almost here, and more people are e-filing than ever. If you haven't done your taxes yet, we have information on your options plus reviews of major Web-based tax-prep sites.

April 15 is just around the corner. Have you filed your tax return? As of April 3, 89.2 million people had filed, nearly four-fifths of them electronically.

Some of those people are probably already spending their refunds, while you face a weekend of sorting through receipts and struggling with IRS forms. Don't despair, though. Read our reviews of the major Web-based tax-prep services. TurboTax Premier had the edge in our tests, but only a slight one over TaxAct Online Deluxe and TaxCut Premium. Other options include CompleteTax Premium and TaxBrain 1040 Premium.

And while you may think there's just one right answer when it comes to determining how much you owe Uncle Sam, our research shows that different software packages can produce different bottom lines. How much different? Nearly $2000 on a tax bill of around $20,000.

The IRS has a legal mandate to get 80 percent of returns filed electronically, and that pressure could work to your advantage. Before you start filling out printed forms, see how you might be able to file electronically for free.
