The iPhone has a reputation for childishness, and to be fair a lot of the apps aimed at children do aim for the lowest common denominator (we're looking at you, Pull My Finger!)

But there is a wealth of really cool looking educational apps aimed at kids, and making the most of the iPhone (and iPod touch) technology.

Shape Builder, by Touch Screen Preschool Games, is an app aimed at pre-school kids that enables them to move around blocks to form shapes. It's like a virtual jigsaw.

According to the developer:

"Designed exclusively for the iPhone and iPod Touch, Shape Builder educates and entertains preschoolers with easy to move shapes that snap into place on top of silhouette puzzles. Each puzzle has 5 to 10 pieces and after positioning all of the pieces, the real image is revealed along with a professional voice recording of the word spoken by a licensed speech therapist, Jill Dews. Shape Builder encourages cognitive thinking and fine motor skills plus exposes young minds to new music instruments, animals, produce, objects and the alphabet in a fun and engaging format with LOTS of sound effects!"
