Today (June 9) is patch Tuesday and Microsoft failed to offer a fix for a recently disclosed bug involving DirectX and QuickTime. The flaw is pretty dangerous, a malicious QuickTime file can be used to take complete control of a computer.
The flaw affects Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000. It does not affect Vista or Windows Server 2008.
The good news is that Microsoft has provided an excellent work-around in the form of a downloaded file. In fact, the work-around is so targeted and limited in its effect, that I doubt anyone installing it will notice any adverse changes to their computer.
