QNAP Systems has introduced the SS-839 Pro Turbo Network Attached Storage (NAS) system, an eight-bay system that accommodates 2.5-inch hard disk drives, small enough to fit on a desktop. It costs $899.

The SS-839 is Mac, Linux and Windows-compatible, and is powered by an Intel Atom N270 microprocessor paired with 2GB DDRII memory. It can accommodate up to four terabytes (TB) of storage capacity, and comes equipped with two external Serial ATA (eSATA) and five USB 2.0 ports for additional expansion. It connects to the network using two Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Features include iSCSI support with thin provisioning, online RAID capacity expansion and RAID level migration, AES 256-bit volume-based encryption, Wake on LAN, automatic policy-based IP blocking, network share status report, instant SMS and e-mail alert, BT download, LCD panel RAID configuration, scheduled power-on and power-off, and support for IP-based cameras for network surveillance.

Software features of the NAS include built-in FTP, Web server with phpMyAdmin, Joomla, MySQL/SQLite, and printer server. You can also add more software applications to the NAS such as a mail server, WordPress blog and more.
