The Best Tech Deals of the Week

We'll show you where to find the best prices on a variety of products, including a Nikon digital SLR, an unlocked Nokia cell phone, and a MacBook Core 2 Duo.

Nikon D40 Digital SLR

If you’re looking to get your feet wet in the world of digital SLR cameras, the Nikon D40 is an older model, but still a good one. When it first came out two years ago, it was a great camera. Today, it has fewer megapixels than newer models and lacks some of their bells and whistles--but it has one clear advantage: Price. At $447 shipped from Abe’s of Maine (shave off another $10 by applying coupon code LOYALTY10), including a free 4GB SDHC memory card, it’s about as close to a potential impulse buy as we’ve seen an SLR get.

Canon Pixma MP470 Printer

Once you have sufficiently scratched your photography itch, you’ll need a printer to bring your new creations to life. Enter the Canon Pixma MP470, which you can grab for about $40--$50 off the normal retail price--if you opt for the manufacturer-recertified model (with a 90-day warranty) at Newegg.com. If that isn’t enough, you can use coupon code EMCLTNP66 to take a few more bucks off and get it for a mere $35.

Apple MacBook Core 2 Duo

In these uncertain economic times, household budgets for pretty (and powerful) laptops can be one of the first items on the cutting board. Fortunately, Apple is selling a refurbished Aluminum MacBook Core 2 Duo over at the Apple Store, with free shipping and the standard Apple limited one-year warranty, for $949, or $150 less than it would cost to buy it new. The neighbors will never have to know.

Nokia N85 Cell Phone

The Nokia N85 is an entertainment phone, with a dual-slider design (slide up to reveal the keypad, and down to reveal media playback controls). It has a roomy, gorgeous OLED display--a huge boon as the phone is an excellent multimedia and camera phone. The N85 also has an FM radio with a built-in FM transmitter, handy for streaming music to your car radio. This unlocked phone currently costs $310 after a $50 mail-in rebate and $70 in instant savings at Dell Business; that’s $60 less than when we reviewed it.

Western Digital WD VelociRaptor Hard Drive

Just over a year ago, the 300GB Western Digital WD VelociRaptor hard drive cost $300. Now, find it for just $190 after a $30 mail-in rebate (available through July 12, 2009) at Newegg.com. You'll buy this drive for its speed, not its capacity: This 10,000-rpm drive remains the speediest desktop model around, even though its capacity is about just a sixth of the capacity of the largest 3.5-inch desktop drives available today. The VelociRaptor consists of a 2.5-inch drive on a heat-sink sled that doubles as its 3.5-inch drive bay adapter.
