IBM Recalls AC Adapters

If you've got a Thinkpad notebook, make sure it's not at risk of fire.

IBM has recalled 320,000 AC power adapters for its ThinkPad 310 and ThinkPad iSeries notebook computers, citing potential fire hazards.

Cooperating with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, IBM made the announcement Thursday. IBM is urging consumers who own IBM ThinkPad 3100 (type 2600 only) and IBM ThinkPad iSeries (type 2611 only) notebook computers, to keep an eye on the AC adapter. IBM says the adapter could catch fire when plugged into a power source.

Also affected are IBM WorkPad z50 (type 2608 only) companion devices, which are no longer in production.

IBM says it is aware of only one instance of a small fire caused by a faulty adapter and eight cases where an AC adapter has overheated.

The serial numbers of affected AC adapters are 12J0537, 12J0539, and 02K6562. Consumers should contact IBM at 800-426-3387 or visit IBM's Personal Computing Support site to receive a free replacement AC adapter. IBM is also giving 15 percent discounts on selected merchandise when the recalled AC adapter is returned.
