Visioneer OneTouch 8600

WHAT'S HOT: The Visioneer OneTouch 8600 is one of the fastest 600-by-1200-resolution scanners we've tested. Only the Universal Serial Bus versions of Epson's Perfection 1200 and 636 were faster on both color and black-and-white scans. The OneTouch 8600 comes with USB and parallel interfaces and seven buttons that make scanning, copying, printing, faxing, and optical character recognition work quick and easy.

WHAT'S NOT: Although the $200 OneTouch 8600 produces good overall image quality, the colors appear washed out.

WHAT ELSE: Unlike some SOHO scanners, Visioneer's add-on options make this scanner more versatile: Visioneer offers a $149 automatic document feeder capable of holding up to 50 legal-size sheets, and an optional, $100 transparency adapter.

BEST USE: The OneTouch 8600 will serve SOHO and home users well. The scanner's versatile dual interface makes it a good choice for those still using older PCs that don't have USB ports, yet it will survive the upgrade to PCs that do.
