7/6/09 Hot Pic: "Escape," by Janet Garinger, Orange, California

Janet says: "I saw this homeless person early one morning and imagined that if I were homeless, I would read to escape." She shot the photo with a Canon Digital Rebel EOS and processed it as a High Dynamic Range image.

7/13/09 Hot Pic: "Killdeer Chick Takes a Hike," by Judy Howle, Columbus, Mississippi

Judy writes: "I spotted a pair of killdeer with four chicks. When I stopped my car to take photos, this little guy headed away to join his siblings. I was disappointed with the rear-view shot until I saw it on the computer." Judy used a Canon EOS 50D.

Marlena writes: "I took this picture on an afternoon walk in my neighborhood. I used my Canon PowerShot AS590 IS in macro mode. I like how this one captures the details of the dandelion in the foreground while foreshadowing the dandelion's future in the background."

7/27/09 Runner-Up: "Poles," by William Egan, Lutherville, Maryland

William says: "I took this photo using the camera on my iPhone. I was on a fishing trip in the Chesapeake Bay, trolling with 26 lines out. The sun was casting a nice hue on the rods so I got under them to capture the vertical pattern. The IPhone warped the image slightly, which is how the fish-eye effect was created."
