Dell Inspiron 5000 G700VT

Dell's latest SpeedStep notebook offers top-notch display and long battery life.

WHAT'S HOT: A modular bay on the front of the Inspiron 5000 G700VT's case lets you swap out the DVD-ROM drive for a second battery ($99) or for an Iomega Zip 100 drive ($139). The bay can also hold a plastic placeholder that shaves the notebook's weight from 7.8 pounds (without an AC adapter) to 7.2 pounds.

WHAT'S NOT: The G700VT lags slightly behind other PIII-700/550 laptops equipped with 128MB of RAM: Its PC WorldBench 2000 score of 127 is 4.5 percent lower than the score for Quantex's similarly configured, but cheaper ($2999) W-1511.

WHAT ELSE: DVD movies look great on the Inspiron 5000 G7000VT and should play even better on a TV, via the notebook's TV-out port. For graphics or spreadsheet work, you can ratchet the screen resolution up to 1400 by 1050 pixels--the highest notebook resolution currently possible--and still get a pretty good display. The G700VT also lasts a slightly longer-than-average 3.25 hours on one battery charge. Oddly, this top-of-the-line laptop ships standard with the less-capable Microsoft Works 2000 suite. (Buying it with Microsoft Office Small Business Edition installed costs an extra $91.)

BEST USE: Dell fans will like the Inspiron 5000 G700VT, but others should consider Quantex's W-1511, practically the same machine for $288 less.
