Dual-Mode Digital Cameras Do Video, Stills

Versatile Web cameras from Agfa and Ezonics can also be used for on-the-go snapshots.

Ezonics' Ample Software

Although Ezonics' EZDual Cam is a bit bulkier and not quite as intuitive as the Agfa camera, becoming proficient at using it doesn't take long. Most functions are accessed via a single control switch consisting of four arrow keys and an LCD panel. The EZDual Cam comes with 2MB of internal memory for storing up to 20 VGA images. The camera also has a manual focus control and a tripod screw-mount, and comes bundled with an 8-foot USB cable, a 9-volt alkaline battery, and a comprehensive user manual.

Like most Webcams, the EZDual Cam's live video mode supports up to 30 fps at 352 by 288 pixels, or 10 to 15 fps at VGA resolution. The EZDual Cam's wide range of software is arguably this product's strongest feature. The bundle includes Ezonics Live Express, which offers modules for creating video files and snapshots, sending video mail, and setting up motion detection. Also included are Ulead Photo Express 3.0, Ulead Photo Explorer 4.2 (for image management), Ulead Cool 360 (for creating panoramas), Microsoft NetMeeting, and other software for creating multimedia greeting cards and calendars.

If you want a Web camera that can also serve as a digital still camera, either the Agfa EPhoto CL18 or Ezonics EZDual Cam can fill the bill. But of the two, the Agfa camera's extras, especially its built-in flash and video-out capability, make it the better bargain.
