Split the Difference

Set ICQ 2000a to use single or split message windows.

The latest version of ICQ lets you toggle your instant message windows between a single-pane style (seen in previous ICQ versions) and a split-pane style (patterned after AOL Instant Messenger).

In Single Message Mode, after you type your message and click the Send button, the message window disappears. The Split Message Mode allows you to see the conversation thread in an upper pane of the New Message window.

To change from one mode to the other, double-click anyone on your contact list to create a New Message window, then click the button labeled "Msg Mode." In the dialog that appears, you'll see two buttons: Single Message Mode Window and Split Message Mode Window. The button representing the mode you're using will be grayed-out; click the other button to switch modes.

If you change your mind and want to switch back, take the exact same steps again. And if you want to be able to toggle more quickly between the two styles, check the "Don't show again" box in the mode selection dialog.
