Palm's Pocket Organizer for the Rest of Us
Palm targets the mainstream with its latest offering, the bargain-priced Palm m100.

In spite of the m100's reduced price, you're not sacrificing too much. However, the memory is limited to 2MB--far less than the 8MB of memory found in more expensive models, including Handspring's Visor Deluxe and Palm's IIIc, Vx, and the newly announced VIIx. The m100's memory cannot be upgraded, but 2MB should be enough to store up to 5000 addresses, appointments, to-do items, and memos, along with any number of the various downloadable apps available. And to keep the price in line, the m100 comes with a sync cable to connect the Palm to a PC, but not a desktop cradle--a minor, but tolerable, inconvenience.
The unit also features some new built-in software and amenities--one specifically designed around the m100's case--that help make the smaller screen a nonissue. When the m100's wrap-around swivel cover is closed, the date and time are revealed through a porthole-like window when you press the exposed panel button.
Also new is a Note Pad app that lets you make quickie notes and doodles anywhere on the screen in your own handwriting. By contrast, the usual Graffiti method of inputting text is limited to a small, dedicated entry area at the bottom of the screen.
The m100 uses two AAA batteries that supply the three to four weeks of power typical of previous, cell-battery-powered Palms. Bundled with the unit is a set of four easily attachable, different-colored faceplates. The protective hard-shell screen door sometimes seems to get in the way, but it is removable. Alas, the connecting hinge has flimsy plastic teeth that, if not inserted carefully, could break, rendering the door useless.
Overall, the m100 is a welcome, affordable device from Palm for anyone who has considered getting one, but has hedged because of the cost.
