ATI Radeon 64MB DDR

WHAT'S HOT: ATI's Radeon offers a plethora of fancy specifications such as "Hyper Z," which compresses frame rates quickly at high resolutions and is designed to add more realism to 3D graphics. It also offers 64MB of DDR memory, more than we usually see on a graphics board. On top of that, the board is highly connectable: It comes equipped with connectors to send video out to a TV or VCR--a plus if you plan to use this card for video presentations--and supports DVI (digital video interface), a helpful feature if you need to hook up to a digital display.

WHAT'S NOT: In some of our performance tests, the Radeon lagged behind boards with GeForce2 chips, Radeon's primary competition. For instance, it tanked in Viper's Need for Speed: High Stakes, delivering a sluggish 15 frames per second at 32-bit color--nearly half the performance we saw with some other boards. In Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, the Radeon performed no better (or worse) than other cards. Its $399 price earns it the dubious distinction of being one of the most expensive boards we've seen.

WHAT ELSE: ATI provides a five-year warranty on parts and labor for the Radeon, one of the most generous for a graphics card vendor.

BEST USE: For graphics enthusiasts, but be prepared for sticker shock and uneven performance.
