Does Windows 7 Have Contacts?

Lincoln Spector

Brian Colgin read that Windows 7 no longer has Vista's email program, but does it still store contact information?

Yes. Fortunately, it does. The Contacts program is still there, and it looks pretty much identical to the one in Vista. (Not that that's such a good thing, in my opinion.)

If you upgrade directly from Vista--without doing a clean install--Windows 7 will keep your old contacts intact. If you do a clean install, the old contacts will be in c:\Windows.old\Users\yourlogon\Contacts (where logon is the name you logged in with in Vista). You can simply drag them into the default Contacts folder.

If you upgraded from XP, you must import your XP/Outlook Express address book. Click Start, type contacts and press ENTER. Click the Import link near the top-right corner of the window. Select Windows Address Book File (Outlook Express contacts), and click Import. The file you want is probably in C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\yourlogon\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book. Unfortunately, the Application Data folder is probably hidden, so your best bet is to type the path (or at least part of it).
