Motorola's Latest Droid Ad Hypes Friday's Launch

Brennon Slattery

Verizon and Motorola aren't pulling any punches when it comes to promoting its Droid smartphone. After the iDon't series of advertisements bashing the Apple iPhone's shortcomings, marketers have taken a different approach to stirring the pot: high-budget television ads that look more like trailers for this summer's newest blockbuster.

In "Stealth," a series of planes blast pods into an idyllic Americana landscape. Witnesses approach the steaming craters apprehensively and are greeted by capsules containing the Motorola Droid. "Drop Date 11/6/09" closes the ad.

Boy Genius Report first reported the ad, and claim that the clips will start airing this week.

The Motorola Droid, hailed as a dead-serious contender in the smartphone race, is powered by the impressive Android 2.0, and will retail for $199 as part of a two-year service contract with Verizon.
