We've all seen augmented reality in the movies: A character puts on a pair of glasses and suddenly data about his surroundings appear within his field of vision. However, this technology is coming to a device near you. Senior Editor Mark Sullivan takes a look at recent developments, including BMW's project that puts repair data on the inside of glasses for mechanics, an iPhone app that uses the camera and compass to provide location-based information, a demo of an augmented reality-assisted GPS system, and the University of Washington's efforts to display data on contact lenses.
