IBM PC 300PL

Good performance and excellent security features shine in this IBM.

WHAT'S HOT: Shooting to an impressive score of 200 on our PC WorldBench 2000 tests, the 300PL, which includes a Pentium III-866 inside and runs Windows NT 4.0, is a speedy system. Advanced corporate options also make this system an excellent choice for users with security needs. The unit features a case lock with keys, chassis intrusion detection, and a network interface card that supports the remote management technology Wake on LAN.

WHAT'S NOT: At this price point ($3070), we'd like to see more than a basic 18X-48X CD-ROM drive. The system also lacks a reset button and documentation for individual components.

WHAT ELSE: Colors on the 19-inch IBM P96 monitor appeared a tad dark, but text remained clear even at a high resolution of 1600 by 1200. Opening the case proved simple, thanks to one large thumbscrew, but replacing the case (which comes completely off) took a bit of finagling. The interior is cramped, but it offers two open PCI slots and two open bays for expansion.

BEST USE: The 300PL makes a great corporate performer for users interested more in security and reliability than multimedia extras.
