Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 2 a Record-Breaker

Assassin's Creed 2

Ubisoft's action-stealth game Assassin's Creed 2 already has its predecessor on the run for first-week sales, to the tune of 1.6 million units worldwide. That's 32 percent more than Ubisoft's original medieval sneaker, which, working backwards from that figure, sold about 1.1 million units during its inaugural sales week in November 2007.

The news ought to reassure timorous investors who this morning bet the results would come in lower and temporarily dropped Ubisoft's share price by up as much as 7 points.

Sure, it's no Modern Warfare 2 in terms of unit sales, but then what is? Even Grand Theft Auto IV's eating humble pie after Activision's internal sales estimates put MW2's total one-day take at $310 million in the US and UK alone. Wait until we get the official domestic and worldwide figures.

Ubisoft told Reuters in September that it was banking on the release of Assassin's Creed 2 to meet or exceed its 2009-2010 financial goals. The company's sales target for Assassin's Creed 2 is 8 million units. If they hit that or better, they'll be at least 15 points over Assassin's Creed's 6.8 million grab.
