MAG InnoVision 770FD

This 17-inch monitor has a high-end FD Trinitron tube and an affordable price, but its image quality keeps it out of our Top 10.

WHAT'S HOT: The 770FD would make a fine choice for price-conscious buyers. At $249, it costs about $70 less than most 17-inch monitors, yet it comes with a high-end FD Trinitron tube, which generally cannot be found for such an affordable price.

WHAT'S NOT: Despite its high-quality tube, the 770FD stumbled in our image-quality tests, keeping it off the chart. Text on word-processing documents and spreadsheets was blotchy. When displaying Web pages and photographs, the 770FD rendered colors with a dark, dullish pallor. Tech support hours offered by MAG are on the stingy side: Many vendors offer 24-hour daily support, but the 770FD comes with just 12 hours on weekdays only. Twelve hours on weekdays might be enough, however, for business rather than home users.

WHAT ELSE: The 770FD's front bezel hosts a wheel for access to easy-to-use on-screen controls. The display includes some advanced controls such as vertical and horizontal moire, which might make this model useful for graphic designers and CAD users.

BEST USE: Budget-conscious graphics pros could save money with the 770FD, but because of its mediocre image quality, we recommend you look elsewhere.
