Target Will Install Your HDTV Set -- For a Price

Target is getting into the HDTV delivery and installation business, just in time for the Super Bowl. The big-box retailer has announced that it will now ship and set up that gargantuan LCD or plasma HDTV that might not fit in your car.

The service isn't free, however. And in fact, it can be downright pricey if you're not careful. Target's TV delivery and setup fees start at $99, and a wall-mount installation runs $199 or higher. Want Target to a haul away your old set? TV recycling costs an extra $50. How about that video game console? They'll set that up for an extra $99. Home network? That's another $99.

So much for "Expect More, Pay Less."

Target is teaming up with Zip Express Installation, a nationwide consumer electronics installation provider with more than 16,000 installers across the U.S. The service is also available for TVs not purchased at Target.

So when does a pro install make sense? Well, if you're investing big bucks in, say, a 65-inch HDTV behemoth, it's probably smart to let the pros bring it over and set it up properly. But if you're the do-it-yourself type who's interested in saving a few bucks, you might consider buying an HDTV at Target's website and selecting the "free shipping" option, if available.

Example: Target is currently selling a Vizio 55-inch LCD HDTV (120Hz) for $1449.99 with free shipping. (Costco has the same deal, including free delivery, by the way.) If you were to buy the Vizio TV at your local Target and have it delivered, you'd pay an extra $99. Of course, the installers would also set up the TV correctly, check the HD cables, and remove the packaging too. But you can do all that…right?

Option two: Maybe the cable guy will set it up for free.
