EMachines ETower 700

A low-cost system with both DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives.

WHAT'S HOT:

This is one of the few systems we've seen for under $1000 (after a $75 rebate) equipped with both DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives (in a combo unit). The minitower case comes with a USB port and a gaming/MIDI port placed conveniently on the front.

WHAT'S NOT: This Celeron-700-based system's PC WorldBench 2000 score of 98 is more typical of Celeron-500-based systems we've tested. Because the integrated graphics will not support 32-bit color, the ETower 700 was unable to run either Quake III or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000; frame rates for Rage Expendable were very low. The tiny pair of inexpensive EMachines SP-12 speakers produces weak volume and poor sound.

WHAT ELSE: The system comes with no open drive bays, but the two free PCI slots are easy to access. The 17-inch EView 17 monitor displayed crisp text at 1024 by 768 resolution, but blurred small text at higher settings. The screen suffered from excessive, uncontrollable flicker at 1280 by 1024 resolution.

BEST USE: The ETower 700 is fine for basic tasks like e-mail, surfing the Web, or word processing, but it is not suited for video, animation, or graphics-intensive applications.
