NuTrend Business Athlon 1

Middle-of-the-road system could use a monitor upgrade.

  

WHAT'S HOT:

With both a modem and network interface card, this NuTrend offers more connectivity options than the average system. It ships with Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business Edition. Another bonus: This NuTrend uses the Leadtek WinFast GeForce2 MX graphics board, which offers color compensation for dimly lit environments.

WHAT'S NOT: The 17-inch ViewSonic E771 monitor produced fuzzy text that proved unreadable at the highest resolution of 1280 by 1024, but it did offer rich colors in our test images. Still, we'd recommend an upgrade. The system ships with a plain, 40X-52X CD-ROM drive, which is a shade darker than the midsize tower's light beige.

WHAT ELSE: The Business Athlon 1, with an enhanced Athlon-800 processor and running Windows Me, earned a score of 149 on our PC WorldBench 2000 tests--average for similarly configured systems, though we have only two others for comparison. A helpful binder houses software and documentation, including a handy setup poster and a detailed manual with abundant--though slightly generic--troubleshooting information. You must remove two screws to open the side of the midsize tower case; the side panel then comes off and goes back on smoothly. The machine's spacious, neat interior offers easy access to two open PCI slots and four open drive bays. A Microsoft Internet Keyboard permits smooth and silent typing, with seven programmable Web-access and multimedia buttons.

BEST USE: For $1499, small business users could do worse than this NuTrend, though it's worth paying the extra $100 or so to upgrade to an Optiquest Z90 19-inch monitor.
