Recycling for Nerds: External Drives Give VHS Tapes New Life

Most external hard drives share the same basic aesthetic features: A plastic or metal shell and some blinking lights. For something different, check out the VHS hard drives offered on the CentennialMerchant store on Etsy (an Ebay-like site for handmade goods).

CentennialMerchant is offering a number of repurposed VHS "classics" (surely up for debate) as external hard drive enclosures. It's a very slick-looking modification; the VHS tapes even include their original sleeve!

With the USB cable removed, the the tape enclosure is almost indistinguishable from a working VHS, save for the hard drive serial number peeking out from behind the acrylic window. If you find the current selection of tapes lacking, you're welcome to request a specific title.

Prices are currently set at $124 for a 500GB drive, and $104.99 for a 320GB drive, though CentennialMerchant will also create a custom enclosure for a 640GB drive upon request.
