AOpen CD-RW 12/10/32

An affordable 12X/10X/32X drive and a solid performer, once you upgrade the software.

WHAT'S HOT: The AOpen CD-RW 12/10/32 is a great performer and one of the least expensive 12X/10X/32X drives we've tested. It shattered the record for reading our 430MB test folder from CD-R by about half a minute. It took 5 minutes, 53 seconds to write 430MB on the fly, and 5 minutes, 16 seconds to write 430MB from an image.

WHAT'S NOT: This drive is available in retail stores only in the western United States; however, several small online vendors also sell it. The 12-hour tech support AOpen provides is weekdays only, and you pay any toll charges. We found no mention of enabling Direct Memory Access (DMA) for top performance in the drive's rather sparse documentation--though when we asked, AOpen recommended doing so.

WHAT ELSE: AOpen backs the drive with a one-year warranty. We had to upgrade the NTI CD Maker 2000 Plus software that came with our test drive from version 4.0 to version 4.2 before we were able to write image files, burn to CD-R from images, or packet-write to CD-RW at speeds faster than 4X. If you've already purchased or plan to purchase an AOpen CD-RW 12/10/32, make sure to upgrade the software via the link you'll find on AOpen's Web site.

BEST USE: The AOpen CD-RW 12/10/32 is one of the more affordable 12X/10X/32X drives we've seen and a solid performer, once you upgrade the software.
