KDS AV-7TF

This monitor produces lovely graphics, and Web pages and photographs show rich, vivid color.

WHAT'S HOT: At just $239, the AV-7TF is significantly less expensive than the average 17-inch monitor, even though it uses a Trinitron tube. It also produces lovely graphics, and Web pages and photographs show rich, vivid color.

WHAT'S NOT: Though the graphics looked vivid, text appeared fuzzier and less solid than it did on most of the other models we reviewed. KDS's support hours are rather short, at only 9 hours on weekdays. And KDS made the dubious design choice of putting the degauss button in a prominent position on the monitor bezel instead of within the on-screen menus; you can easily hit it by accident and degauss when you don't want to.

WHAT ELSE: Most of the other controls and menus are easy to use, with clear labels for menu choices and their functions. You also get an advanced zoom feature to magnify the screen.

BEST USE: The AV-7TF may work for people who are looking for an inexpensive monitor and who don't work with lots of text.
