Compaq IJ1200

This ink jet model delivers fast text performance and good graphics quality.

WHAT'S HOT: Compaq simply relabeled a Lexmark model to produce the IJ1200: the Lexmark Z42 Color Jetprinter. Like the Z42, the IJ1200 prints text at a zippy 4.5 pages per minute, and it beats the Lexmark model at printing graphics, at 0.5 ppm. Text looks crisp, if slightly less black than we'd like, while color graphics show subtle textures and shading with fine detail. The driver makes it easy to print documents that deviate from the ordinary single-sided letter-size job; you can easily stack, fold, and bind booklets, for example.

WHAT'S NOT: Ink costs run very high, at 5.2 cents per page for plain black text and 19.1 cents for color graphics. (You can save about half on ink by buying Compaq's high-yield cartridges.)

WHAT ELSE: Compaq offers two free software packages ($9 shipping) as an incentive to register; you can pick up three more for $40. The list includes such useful tools as Corel's PhotoPaint, CorelDraw Classic, and WordPerfect, as well as MGI's PhotoSuite III SE and VideoWave III SE.

BEST USE: Fast text performance means the IJ1200 can keep up with a small home office, and good graphics quality enables it to hold its own in the family room.
