Bored? Lonely? Single? Need something fun to do in a strange city? Wertago is here to help. Wertago (as in "Where-to-go," not "Vertigo") is a location app that pulls up all nearby venues and events and incorporates standard social networking aspects so that you can post tweet-like messages, find friends, or "coordinate a meet-up."

Tapping on 'Venues' produced a fairly extensive list of activity spots nearby and included information on distance, tags, and ratings. Clicking on one of my results, a nightclub called The End Up, brought up the venue's address and phone number as well as an option to add an event at that location or to announce that I had arrived there. The bottom of the entry invited me to add tags, take or upload a photo, and read posted reviews or related threads; it also had a list of users who tagged it as a favorite place.

Selecting 'Events' from the main menu brings up tabs along the bottom for a map, filter, or event. The map pinpointed all nearby events, though I did have to zoom in quite a bit as the default view covered a fairly large area. 'Filter' lets you easily winnow the results for nearby events; picking 'Events' again yields nearby events listed by date. I ran into some trouble when I tried to browse back and forth between the tabs, and more than once the app gave me an error message when I attempted to change the tabs in the Events feature. Fortunately, this problem proved to be temporary.

Events are organized by date, and their listings provide additional information on location, distance, ratings, and tags. Choosing an event from this list brings up the venue information at the top of the screen and any event listing at the bottom. Wertago isn't just about finding a nightspot, however--it adds social networking features so you can also connect with the other dancers at dub night or the AC/DShe show. Profiles include an inbox, a photo tab, a search option, and a friends group. The "Pulse" will show you who likes what near your location but it depends to a considerable extent on the details you provide in your profile. If you don't register, some features won’t be available to you. If you do, you'll have a new handle on your after-hours activities: For finding out what's happening, where, and with whom; for connecting with other users; and for posting updates on a Twitter-type message board, Wertago has enough conveniently organized information to be essential for serious nightlifers.
