IBM's utilizes both Intel and Nvidia chips--the first time that IBM has ever mixed the two processors in a supercomputer, according to a CNET report.
The new computer will be able to compete with other big name computer systems due to it's hybrid capabilities. "Now customers will have access to everything IBM brings to the table in high-performance computing,” Sumit Gupta, senior manager of Nvidia's Tesla told CNET.
The IBM iDataPlex Dx360 M3 uses Intel Xeon CPUs and Nvidia Tesla GPUs. The Dx360 M3 can be clustered with other Dx360 Mx modules to create larger more powerful systems or super computers. Typically computers use the CPU or central processing unit for completing system tasks like opening applications and maintaining the overall system. The GPU or graphics processing units are typically used for more specified tasks such as mathematical calculation or other intensive tasks.
