Google Partners with Sony, Intel for Google TV: Image Overview

Google TV combines TiVo-like navigation and search with Web access, supports Flash, runs Android with third-party apps and a marketplace, and is built around a special Intel Atom CPU.

Google TV software will be available on select model Bravia Sony TV sets. Google said you'll be able to add Google TV to any TV set using a Google TV "Buddy Box." We can assume that some of these set-top boxes will have digital video recorders built-in and allow you to record TV shows. Google TV will also have access to the Android market where you will be able to browse apps, games, and other downloads.

Google will be able to offer video feeds that also pull in related information about what you are watching from the Internet. You'll never be more than a few hops away from looking up team statistics while watching the big game with Google TV.

Sony says it will put Google TV software on some of its Bravia TV sets as well as Blu-ray players. This Sony Internet TV "provides richer internet access so you can browse the web just like you would from a computer. Seamlessly navigate between websites and TV channels or enjoy both at the same time. On the same screen," according to the company.

Logitech says it will offer a Google TV "box" that will "leverage" its Harmony remote technology to give you "seamless" control over the service from your couch.

Dish Network also says it will use the Google TV platform in its satellite set-top boxes. "Dish Network subscribers using Google TV can simultaneously search for content across DISH Network, the Internet and their DVRs. They can overlay online content related to television shows, movies, actors and more; and also hyperlink web content back to multichannel TV," it said in a statement.

Google TV will be tied closely to an ecosystem of devices - namely your Android phone that can be turned into a Google TV controller. Logitech takes it a step further and will offer Google TV peripherals that include: HDTV camera and video calling software (so you can talk with friends and family from your couch), keyboard, and Harmony remote.
