Motorola Droid X: A Visual Tour

Here's a look at Verizon's new Motorola Droid X smartphone, which has impressive features such as an 8-megapixel camera, HDMI and DLNA video output, a 4.3-inch display, and a snappy 1GHz TI OMAP processor.

Droid X Front

The front of Verizon's Motorola Droid X has four small hardware buttons: Menu, Home, Back, and Search. The generous, 4.3-inch, WVGA, 854-by-480-pixel screen takes up most of the space. That's good, because the touchscreen is the main interface; typing on this model's on-screen keyboard is much improved over older Android smartphones. The screen quality is excellent, and streaming-video sites such as Vimeo play amazingly well, displaying sharp and crisp images.

The back of the Verizon Motorola Droid X has an odd hump that houses the 8-megapixel camera as well as the "diversity antenna," which Motorola claims will improve voice-call quality.

Droid X HD Choices

One of the most interesting features of the Droid X is the phone's ability to output 720p video to a TV through an HDMI port; it can also stream video wirelessly via the DLNA standard. So far, this function is limited to videos and photos taken with the smartphone's camera. Motorola will offer cradles for automobile and home use that will recharge the phone as it streams video.

Here's a close-up of the HDMI port. It will be interesting to see if future updates allow third-party apps such as YouTube to access this port--a move that would open up a lot of possibilities for on-demand video.

The Droid X home screen continues the techno-industrial motif of the Droid brand.

Droid X App Launcher

The Droid X is loaded up with apps, including Skype and Gmail, plus tools for voice commands, instant messaging, a calendar, and e-mail. Thousands more are available for download through the Android Market app.

The Camera app has a cool Camera Roll view with a Cover Flow-like effect.

This shot shows the new Motorola Droid X next to its older sibling, the Motorola Droid. Though the Droid X lacks a physical keyboard, its larger touchscreen allows for pleasant on-screen typing.

Droid vs. Droid X vs. EVO 4G

Here is a side-by-side comparison, with Verizon's Motorola Droid X situated between the older Motorola Droid (keyboard retracted) on the left and the recently released Sprint HTC EVO 4G on the right. The Droid X is the longest phone, while the EVO 4G is the widest. The older Droid, not a small phone itself, looks almost petite in comparison. Though the Droid X is large, it's still thin enough to be pocketable.

Here you can see how the Droid, Droid X, and EVO 4G literally stack up against one another. The Droid (top) is the thickest. Meanwhile, the Droid X (middle) is thinner than the EVO 4G--except for its hump. The hump means that you can easily slide the Droid X into your pocket only one way. Fortunately, the headphone jack is on top of the thicker end.
