CAPTCHA system blocks trolls from your website (and other things we didn't cover)
What do CAPTCHAs, robots, and Kickstarter have in common? Not much, as it turns out—aside from the fact that they're all in this Friday edition of GeekBytes.
CAPTCHA system works for civil rights while fending off spambots and trolls [Civil Rights Defenders]
Everyone hates the CAPTCHA, but no matter how annoying it is, it's sometimes necessary. A human rights group called Civil Rights Defenders took the CAPTCHA concept to a whole new level, and created a system that relies on empathy to make sure you're human (and a nice human at that). The system asks you a question related to human rights, and depending on your answers, it decides if you're a bot or not. The questions are based on emotions, not general knowledge, so if reading about people getting beat up makes you feel "fascinated," you're either not human, or just a jerk. Either way, you're not getting in. [via The Verge]
Kinect-based system teaches robots to perform tasks [Georgia Institute of Technology]
Robots are nothing new, and we loveeverythingabout them here at GeekTech. But robots still aren't human—in order to perform tasks, they need to be programmed. A new system developed by Neil Dantam and colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta uses the Kinect to record human tasks, and then breaks them into a list of short actions robots can carry out. Tasks can be recorded multiple times, and the robots can learn to switch methods in case things don't work out. The system can provide a quick and easy way to teach robots to perform daily tasks; just show them what to do, and they'll take it from there. [via New Scientist]
As of October 31, Kickstarter won't be US-only anymore: On that day, the wildly popular crowdfunding site will come to the UK. According to Kickstarter, UK-based projects will be almost identical to the US ones we know, except for a different payment method for backers. Speaking of payment, Kickstarter also introduced a new, more streamlined international shipping option, making it much clearer whether extra shipping costs are required for international shipping, and if such shipping is even available.
