Smell-O-Vision might never have caught on, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still people out there looking to capitalize on the bizarre combination of smell and technology.
The Japanese company Chaku Perfume has jumped on board this oft-forgotten phenomenon with the Chat Perf, an iPhone app and device that lets you send smells via the internet, RocketNews24 reports.
The gadget attaches to the iPhone’s 30-pin dock connector, and it contains an atomizer and a scent tank. A single button press within the app unleashes the aroma from the Chat Perf. Although the app itself appears to be simple enough to operate, the attachable device has its own set of drawbacks, as Popular Science discusses.
Most disappointing is the fact that any given Chat Perf can only hold one scent at a time. If your friends want to send you multiple smells throughout the day, you had better prepare a few Chat Perf smell tanks in advance. Practicality is certainly not one of the gadget’s objectives.
This may not the future of sensory communication, but it is a very, very strange step along the way. Then again, at least it’s not as dangerous as a speeding baby stroller. The harmless Chat Perf will be available in Japan for 4,980 yen (about $63) this fall.
