Black Friday doorbuster tech deals: A preview

Black Friday Doorbuster Deals Preview

Black Friday Doorbuster Preview

The holiday shopping season officially begins this week. Note: this year sales often start Thursday evening and/or early Friday morning, and major retailers will offer some pretty sweet doorbuster deals to lure you into their overcrowded stores.

If you're going to brave the crowds for an HDTV, a laptop, a gaming console, a tablet, or even a cheap hard drive to use to back up with, here is a selection of some of the hottest doorbuster deals available. Just remember these deals are only while supplies last and, not surprisingly at these prices, supplies are always limited.

Best Buy: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet, $180

Model: GT-P3113ZWYXAR

Specs: This tablet comes with a 7-inch display with 1024-by-600 resolution, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 8GB of onboard storage, a microSD card reader (32GB max.), as well as Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

Thoughts: Save yourself about $70 and pick up a $180 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 on Friday, and you can get it in white, instead of black, to boot.

Walmart: Vizio 60-inch Smart TV, $688

Model: E601i-A3

Specs: Comes with 1080p resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, built-in Wi-Fi, four HDMI ports, two USB ports, 802.11n Wi-Fi (single band), and it's LED backlit.

Thoughts: Walmart is currently selling this HDTV for $998. At $310 off, you can bet this Vizio 1080p HDTV is going to be a popular item on Friday.

Staples: 15.6-inch Toshiba Satellite laptop, $580

Model: L855-S5372

Specs: This laptop comes with 15.6-inch TFT LED-backlit screen with 1366-by-768 resolution, 3.4GHz Intel Core i7-3630QM processor, 6GB of RAM, a 640GB HDD, an HDMI port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 ports, and 1 USB 2.0 port.

Thoughts: It's a little heavy at 5.5 pounds, but with a Core i7 processor, a huge hard drive, 6GB of RAM that is expandable up to 16GB, and Windows 8, what more do you need?

Costco: Seagate 3TB hard drive, $100

Model: Backup Plus

Specs: Comes with USB 3.0

Thoughts: Costco hadn't published its Black Friday flyer online as of this writing, but several Black Friday sites have a Costco adscan showing this 3TB drive available for just $100. This is a great deal; $100 usually buys you just 2TB or less.

Target: Xbox 360 Kinect Bundle, $200

Model: unpublished

Specs: Comes with a 4GB Xbox 360, a Kinect sensor, Kinect Adventures, Kinect Disneyland, the Xbox wireless controller, and a 3-month Xbox LIVE Gold subscription.

Thoughts: If you want a cheaper Xbox with Kinect, you would probably have to pick up Microsoft's upcoming $499 subsidized consoles. But, with this deal, you don't have to sign up for a two-year commitment to Xbox LIVE.

Target's doors open at 9 p.m. on Thursday, so you may have to cut dinner short to get this deal.

Radio Shack: 15.6-inch HP Envy laptop, $400

Model: G6-2244NR

Specs: Comes with a 15.6-inch display with 1366-by-768-pixel resolution; 2.7GHz AMD A6-4400M processor; 4GB of RAM; a 640GB HDD; 802.11n Wi-Fi; two USB 3.0 ports; one USB 2.0 port; an HDMI port; and Windows 8.

Thoughts: Good deal on a basic laptop.

Target: Westinghouse 50-inch LCD, $350

Model: CW50T9XW

Specs: Comes with a 50-inch LCD, 1080p resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, DVI ports, HDMI ports, and one USB 2.0 port.

Thoughts: You can get a big screen for a small price at Target. But with a 60Hz refresh rate, expect this HDTV to be good, but not great.

Best Buy: Sony PS3 Pack, $200

Model: unpublished

Specs: Comes with a 250GB PlayStation 3, the Uncharted Dual Pack of games, inFAMOUS Collection of games, a Dualshock 3 wireless controller, Wi-Fi, and a Blu-ray disc player.

Thoughts: If you're not interested in a cheap Xbox 360 at Target, try Best Buy for a Sony PS3 for the same price. You won't get PlayStation Move (the PS3 version of motion control), but you will get a bunch of games and a larger storage capacity than with Microsoft's console.

This deal is also available at Target.

Walmart: Blu-ray Discs, $10 or less

Walmart: Blu-ray Discs, $10 or less

Thoughts: You can pick up really cheap Blu-ray discs of recent and popular movies from Walmart on Friday. For eight dollars you can get Iron Man 2, Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, and X-Men First Class. Add an extra dollar and you can buy Brave, The Lorax, or Captain America.

Many other titles are also available.

Dell: 23-inch HD monitor, $140

Model: ST2320L

Specs: Comes with a 23-inch LED backlit display with 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, VGA, a DVI-D interface, and an HDMI port.

Thoughts: It seems every monitor manufacturer has its generic 20 some-odd inch monitor for sale, and this is Dell's.

At $140 for 23 inches and three connection options, it's pretty good. Not great, but good.

Best Buy: Toshiba 40-inch LCD HDTV, $180

Model: 40E220U

Specs: Comes with a 40-inch LCD with 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, one USB port, and two HDMI ports.

Thoughts: It's a 1080p HDTV for less than $200. For that price, you can ignore the fact that it lacks a lot of peripheral ports, that Toshiba doesn't mention what version of USB this HDTV has, that it is missing Wi-Fi, ethernet, and Internet apps, and that it doesn't have 120Hz refresh rate.

But, as I said, it's less than two hundred bucks.

Walmart: Nook Color, $100

Model: unpublished

Specs: This tablet comes with a 7-inch display with 1024-by-600-pixel resolution at 169 ppi, an 800Mhz OMAP processor, 8GB of onboard storage, a microSD slot (up to 32GB max.), and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Thoughts: This is probably the price this tablet should have been offered at in the first place, and a great deal at $40 off.

Walmart: Sharp 70-inch HDTV, $1,800

Model: LC-70LE600U

Specs: Comes with a 70-inch LED backlit display with 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution, four HDMI ports, two USB ports, and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Thoughts: Yes, this is a pricey item to put in a doorbuster preview, but it's nearly $700 off Walmart's current price.

Target: Sony PlayStation Vita Wi-Fi, $200

Model: 207-19-0101

Specs: Comes with a 5-inch display, Wi-Fi, front- and rear-facing cameras, and a microphone.

Thoughts: The original PlayStation portable came out in 2005 and, even if it hasn't changed much since then, it is still the best mobile gaming platform out there.

Save yourself $50 and give the latest successor to the original PSP a try.

Walmart: JVC Everio Camcorder, $120

Model: GZHM50US

Specs: Comes with a 2.7-inch LCD display, a 40x optical zoom, 1080p video capture, 8GB pf onboard storage, a memory card slot (SDXC), and HDMI out.

Thoughts: A nice little camcorder for a pretty good price, and you get a good amount of onboard storage.
