While prosthetics continue to get even more advanced in order to help those who need them most, there's no reason why you can’t have a little fun how you design them. After all, realistic parts can be quite pricey. Still, how would you feel about having a new prosthetic arm that looks like an octopus’ tentacle?
Industrial designer Kaylene Kau made the weird prosthetic arm after her professor encouraged original design when it comes to fake limbs. Kaylene ultimately built an adjustable arm, shaped like a tentacle, that can fully curl back over on itself.
Why a tentacle and not something more, well, traditional? After a lot of research, she found that most people with prosthetic arms uses them merely as an assistant to their other functioning hand and to carry out basic tasks rather than anything too complex.
The arm can curl thanks to a pulley system inside the tentacle. A motor on the elbow-end of the arm controls two wires that can either curl the tentacle up or straighten it back out. You can control it with two buttons near the motor.
The tentacle's ability to coil up comes from its segmented design. The segments differ in size, with smaller segments closer to the tip, which allows it to grip objects surprisingly well. The design doesn't require too many parts, which makes it an inexpensive alternative to more traditional prosthetics and quite easy to produce, too.
Although it might be a little too "out there" for the average person, we can't help but be impressed. Either way, if there was a Cthulhu, it would be pretty jealous.
(And yes, we know, Cthulhu has tentacles on its face, not its arms. Forgive the slightly misplaced reference.)
