Twitter Reaches 20 Billion Tweets

Twitter Reaches 20 Billion TweetsOn Saturday Twitter hit a milestone as the 20 billionth tweet was sent over the service.

The landmark tweet was made by "GGGGGGo_Lets_Go," a graphic designer in Tokyo. Like most tweets, it was little more than noise when taken out of context.

According to a translation appearing in the Guardian, the tweet read: "So that means the barrage might come back later all at once."

Since 2006, Twitter users have flooded the Internet with their 140-character babble known as tweets.

Twitter hit the 20 billion mark only two months after reaching 15 billion tweets and five months after reaching 10 billion tweets.

It is fitting that the watershed tweet originated in Japan. Since Twitter launched four years ago, the service has become wildly popular in the island country. About 12 percent of all tweets on the system originate there.

A contributing factor to Twitter's popularity in Japan may be the Japanese language itself. You can say a lot more in 140 kanji characters than you can say in 140 Roman ones.
