Droid Doesn't Get All of Froyo's New Features

The Motorola Droid is expected to receive version 2.2 of Google's Android OS at some point this week. Although, the popular Droid smartphone will not get all the benefits that Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, can offer.

Word regarding the Droid's Froyo update arrived late last month when Verizon Wireless revealed that the 2.2 update would be available during the first week of August. Sadly, Verizon Wireless did not specify a specific date or time for when the update process, for what's seen as the original Android posterboy device, would be available; although it's thought the update may arrive on August 3rd.

The upcoming update will bring many new and improved features to various Android devices, including security changes, Flash, speed gains, improvements to the Android Market and more. However, the Motorola Droid won't be seeing all of the Froyo fun--the handset will not be able to take advantage of a new Android 2.2 functionality which allows both tethering and the creation of Wi-Fi hotspots.

A spokesperson from Verizon Wireless detailed that the Wi-Fi and tethering ability is not possible on the phone that 'does' due to the hardware not being capable of supporting mobile hotspots - Motorola has not commented. Engadget speculates that Verizon's reasoning could well be bogus, a move made due to the existence of newer models Droid 2 and the Droid X.

Are you looking forward to updating your device to 2.2? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
