Gamers are a competitive lot, and sometimes you need to check up on who's playing what when you're out and about. Enter OpenSpark, a free open-source gaming network client that offers users the opportunity to access multiple Xbox Live accounts and send messages from their Android smartphone.

OpenSpark is a great social networking app because it's both speedy and simple to access, though it requires you to submit your Gamertag and password in order to function. Your password is required to access the Xbox Live Website and allow OpenSpark to work it's mojo; while the developer makes the standard promise never to misappropriate your personal data, privacy fanatics may wish to skip this app.

Once you take the privacy plunge, OpenSpark offers a clean interface with the option to send and receive messages, manage your friends list, and view your Achievements, along with your current Gamerscore and a full Avatar display.

The app is stable and updates quickly, but it supports neither notifications nor background updates as of this review. Widget support is also absent, which means you have to manually run the app and wait for it to sync with Microsoft's servers every time you want to see who's online or check for new messages. The most recent update includes a new Microsoft Point utility for calculating the price of different Microsoft Point bundles in multiple currencies, which proved to be neat but practically useless during testing.

Even with these limitations, OpenSpark remains one of the best Xbox Live profile managers available, and you can't beat the price. If the developer manages to include promised features like notification support and the option to integrate profile data from multiple gaming service accounts like Steam and Playstation Network, OpenSpark has the potential to become an absolute Android-based necessity for gamers on the go.
