Kick off your summer reading list this week by checking out not one, but two ebook bundles that feature authors ranging from Frank Herbert (of Dune fame) to Wil Wheaton (reviled-Star-Trek-character-turned-geek-icon).
Both StoryBundle and Humble Bundle are running deals at the moment, so if you need to line up some (presumably) good books to read at the beach (or during an interminable road trip), you might want to check out both.
The Humble Bundle team usually rounds up a handful of video games in a “pay-what-you-want” package—which amounts to a steep discount from retail pricing—with additional games granted to those who pay more than the average.
All games are free of digital rights management, and revenue is split among the game developers, the Humble Bundle team, and various charities.
What works for games, apparently works for books too.
StoryBundle launched in 2012 with the same model as Humble Bundle, except focused on the refined, sophisticated printed word instead of those newfangled video games. The company is currently running a science-fiction bundle, featuring books from the aforementioned Frank Herbert, as well as Nebula award-winners Kevin J. Anderson and Gregory Benford, and Hugo award-winner Kristine Kathryn Rusch.
The Humble Bundle deals are similarly attractive, with multiple Hugo nominees (Boneshaker by Cherie Priest and Little Brother by Cory Doctorow) and one Hugo winner (Spin by Robert Charles Wilson), as well as Wil Wheaton’s Just a Geek.
The Humble Bundle team is also famous for adding more books to the mix later, so there’s a good chance the bundle will expand in a week. Typically, if you purchase before then, you’ll get all those books added to your bundle for free, even if you paid under the average.
Both deals expire in a few weeks, so make sure you get in there quickly.
