Verizon Wireless customers looking to buy the new Nexus 7 tablet with 4G LTE might want to put those plans on hold.
For now, at least, Verizon will not activate the Nexus 7 on its network. “This is not yet a device that is Verizon 4G LTE certified,” Verizon said in a statement to Android Central. “We'll let folks know when it's certified.”
When Google announced the new Nexus 7 last month, the company said the 4G LTE model would support the AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks, all on the same hardware. Google then told The Verge that, while slower CDMA service wouldn't work on Verizon's network, 4G LTE would still be supported.
But when tech pundit Jeff Jarvis tried to activate his Nexus 7, no one at the Verizon Store was able to add the product. A Verizon support representative then explained on Twitter that the Nexus 7 “ can not be activated.”
Jarvis alleges that Verizon has violated its settlement with the FCC, which requires open access to its C-block wireless spectrum by any device. But as GigaOM's Kevin Tofel pointed out, all devices must still be certified, and that this could just be a paperwork issue rather than a malicious move on Verizon's part.
In any case, Verizon hasn't given a time frame for when it will certify the Nexus 7 on its network, which should be frustrating for Verizon customers who already bought the device.
With T-Mobile, buyers get a free month of data with up to 2GB of usage, while AT&T is offering a $100 bill credit in exchange for a two-year service agreement. Perhaps the best move for Verizon customers is to take advantage of T-Mobile's free service for a month, and hope that Verizon and Google get it sorted out by then.
