Amazon's PlayStation Network Store adds full games ahead of PS4 launch

Just days before the PlayStation 4 goes on sale on November 15, Amazon has refreshed its digital PlayStation offerings with the newly named Amazon PlayStation Network Store. The new digital storefront offers digital games, downloadable content (DLC), and season pass subscriptions for the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita alike.

Amazon first offered PlayStation Network games and content in 2009. Now, however, the e-tailer offers full-blown games, including triple-A titles, rather than just DLC and gift cards—and Amazon's offering some nifty discounts to prime the PlayStation 4 pump.

Dumping discs for digital downloads

While discs are still popular among gamers, Sony is focused on ramping up direct game downloads with the PS4. One of the most touted features during Sony's first PS4 introduction earlier in 2013 was a new game streaming feature that gets you playing before the entire game is stored on your console's hard drive.

But future PS4 owners apparently can't grab downloadable digital games from Amazon just yet. At this writing, there were a total of 68 full games for PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita, but nothing for the PS4—not even on pre-order.

EA's Battlefield 4.

For Sony's next-generation console, Amazon's PSN Store currently offers PlayStation Store gift cards, PlayStation Plus memberships, and season passes for Assassin's Creed IV, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC. Now, to be fair, it appears all you're buying from Amazon is a digital purchase code and not the actual game bits, so there's not much to offer would-be PlayStation 4 users before the console's Friday launch. The selection will hopefully widen after the PS4 debuts.

Digital and physical deals galore

Even if Amazon's PSN storefront is somewhat old hat, there are still reasons to check it out on Tuesday. To celebrate its refreshed PSN digital storefront, Amazon is offering $5 of PlayStation Store credit if you purchase a number of select PlayStation 3 digital games and DLC, or physical PlayStation 4 games like Killzone: Shadows Fall.

At the same time, Amazon is also getting ready for the impending launch of the PlayStation 4 with a buy two, get 1 free promotion encompassing some of the most desired titles available at the system's launch, though it's for physical copies of the games.

The sale starts at noon Eastern/9 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday and ends four hours later. Amazon's 2+1 sale includes:

  • Angry Birds: Star Wars
  • Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag
  • Battlefield 4
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • FIFA 14
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition
  • Just Dance 2014
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall
  • Knack
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
  • Madden NFL 25
  • NBA 2K14
  • Need for Speed Rivals
  • Skylanders SWAP Force

With Black Friday right around the corner, perhaps we'll see a sale like this for digital content in the not too distant future?
